Plastic Surgery Statistics, Year by Year

Every year the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) published a national count of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Those reports are no longer online. Below are the headline figures from each one: totals, the top five surgeries and injectables, average surgeon fees, and who had them.

Why this page exists. ASPS has taken its archive of annual Plastic Surgery Statistics Reports, and the press releases that announced them, off plasticsurgery.org. Links to the original PDFs now return a page not found error. We kept copies of the original reports and transcribed the figures people cite most. Each year below lists its source documents, with a link to the Internet Archive copy of the original wherever one exists. All figures are © American Society of Plastic Surgeons; please credit ASPS when you cite them.

ASPS Statistics at a Glance, by Year

Click a year for that report's full headline figures. 2021 is missing because ASPS did not publish a report for it. Starting with 2022, ASPS counts most surgeries from its member surgeons only and stopped publishing a combined cosmetic total, so the 2022 to 2024 rows are not comparable with earlier years (see how the method changed).

The 2019 bar is the restated 2019 total that ASPS published in 2020 with a broader projection method; it is the baseline the 2020 report compares against. ASPS has not published a comparable combined total since 2020.

ASPS Insights and Trends Report, 2022

  • Survey sent in June 2022 to 1,850 ASPS member surgeons with predominantly aesthetic practices; response rate 17.25 percent.
  • More than three fourths of respondents (76 percent) reported increased demand compared with pre pandemic levels.
  • Nearly a quarter of aesthetic focused practices (23 percent) reported their business had doubled, and 6 percent reported more than double their volume.
  • A majority (59 percent) said patients were willing to spend somewhat more, and 17 percent noted a substantial increase in patient spending.
  • Most respondents (83 percent) said patient interest was steady or increasing despite economic uncertainty.

ASPS did not publish a 2021 report. The 2022 release compares 2022 with pre pandemic 2019 and uses a new format: procedures marked by ASPS as member surgeon counts cover ASPS Member Surgeons only, and categories were regrouped, so the totals are not comparable with 2020 and earlier. ASPS did not publish a 2019 comparison for the regrouped minimally invasive categories.

This restated report was the 2019 report on the ASPS statistics page until it went offline, and it is the baseline the 2020 and 2022 reports compare against. The restated report does not include year over year changes or age and gender tables. The figures in the originally published 2019 full report were calculated on the earlier basis and differ; they are not transcribed here.

How ASPS Counted, and How It Changed

2013 to 2018: ASPS surveyed board certified physicians (more than 24,500 were sent the 2018 questionnaire), combined the replies with its Tracking Operations and Outcomes for Plastic Surgeons database, and projected the results to all physicians most likely to perform these procedures. Botulinum toxin figures in these reports count anatomic sites injected.

2019 and 2020: ASPS updated its projections to reflect a broader set of board certified physicians and restated 2019 on that basis, counting botulinum toxin without the anatomic site adjustment. That is why the 2019 figures here (18.4 million cosmetic procedures) are higher than the 2018 report's.

2022 onward: After skipping 2021, ASPS moved to a new format. Most surgical procedures are counted from ASPS member surgeons only, procedure categories were regrouped (for example skin resurfacing and laser skin treatments), minimally invasive counts include non member dermatologists and otolaryngologists, and the 2022 report compares against 2019. In 2024 ASPS began publishing surgeon fees as a projected range instead of a single average.

The practical rule: compare years within the same method. For long run trends in a single procedure, see our data stories on age demographics, the post COVID boom and what cosmetic surgery really costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do the old ASPS plastic surgery statistics links no longer work?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has taken its archive of annual Plastic Surgery Statistics Reports and the press releases that announced them offline, so links to the original PDFs on plasticsurgery.org now return a page not found error. This page preserves the headline figures from each report from 2013 to 2024, transcribed from the original PDFs, and links to the Internet Archive copy of each original where one exists.

How many cosmetic procedures were performed in the US in 2020?

ASPS counted 15,595,955 cosmetic procedures in 2020, down 15% from 18,428,665 in 2019. That included 2,314,720 cosmetic surgical procedures and 13,281,235 minimally invasive procedures. Physicians reported stopping surgical procedures for an average of 8.1 weeks in 2020 because of COVID 19.

What is the most popular cosmetic surgery in the US?

Liposuction has been the most performed cosmetic surgery in the ASPS reports for 2022, 2023 and 2024, with 349,728 procedures in 2024, followed by breast augmentation (306,196). In the 2013 to 2018 reports breast augmentation was the top cosmetic surgical procedure every year, and in the restated 2019 figures and in 2020 nose reshaping ranked first.

How many Botox injections are done in the US each year?

ASPS reported 9,883,711 neuromodulator injections (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau and Daxxify) in 2024, up 4% from 9,480,949 in 2023. Under the older method, which counted anatomic sites injected, the 2018 report listed 7,437,378 botulinum toxin procedures.

How much do Americans spend on cosmetic plastic surgery?

The ASPS fee tables put total 2018 spending on cosmetic procedures at $16,507,440,034, or about $16.5 billion, based on average surgeon and physician fees. The fee tables for 2020 total $20,174,266,026, although the 2020 quick facts page states $16.7 billion. These totals cover surgeon fees only, not anesthesia, operating room or facility costs.

Why are the 2022 to 2024 numbers so different from earlier years?

ASPS changed its method with the 2022 report. Most surgical procedures are now counted from ASPS member surgeons only, procedure categories were regrouped, and minimally invasive totals include non member dermatologists and otolaryngologists. The 2022 report compares against 2019 instead of 2021. Compare years within the same method, not across the change.

Is there a 2021 ASPS plastic surgery statistics report?

No. ASPS did not publish an annual statistics report for 2021. Its 2022 report compared 2022 with the pre pandemic year of 2019.

Can I cite the numbers on this page?

Yes. The figures are facts from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, so cite ASPS and the report year as the source. You are welcome to link to this page, or to the per year section (for example /resources/plastic-surgery-statistics#2020), as an accessible copy of the headline figures. Where the Internet Archive holds a copy of the original PDF, we link to it in each year’s sources.
