Umbilical hernias are very common, particularly during pregnancy, when hormones can cause muscle layers to stretch and a weak spot under the belly button may open. While an umbilical hernia should not be fixed during pregnancy, a persistent protrusion after pregnancy indicates a hernia. These can often be pushed back in, and while they don't always require fixing, if you are undergoing cosmetic belly button surgery, any existing umbilical hernia should be repaired at the same time.
