Industry Payments

Federal law (the Physician Payments Sunshine Act) requires drug and medical-device companies to report anything of value they give to a physician — consulting and speaking fees, research funding, travel, royalties, and even meals. Medicare publishes all of it in a public database called Open Payments. We show it here so you don't have to go looking for it.

Compared to peers

Small

Dr. Monica Velez, D received $473 across 6 payments in 2024. That is in the lower half for physicians here — totals this size are typically meals at sponsored talks. Most of it was categorised as food and beverage, and the largest single payer was Align Technology, Inc..

What this means for your care

  • A disclosed payment is a business relationship, not evidence of wrongdoing, and it says nothing on its own about the quality of your care.
  • Most payments are small. Across the physicians listed on NavMDs, the single most common category is food and beverage at industry-sponsored talks.
  • Larger consulting, speaking or royalty payments mean an ongoing financial relationship with a company whose products your doctor may use or recommend. That is worth knowing about, and it is reasonable to ask about.
  • A fair question to ask: “Do you have a financial relationship with the maker of the implant, filler or device you're recommending — and what alternatives did you consider?”

Questions, Answers, and Information Directly from Dr. Monica Velez, D

Sourced directly from Dr. Monica Velez, D's social posts and replies.

How should patients brush their teeth when they have braces?
When brushing with braces, it's important to brush all angles of your teeth. Start by brushing on top of the braces, then flip the toothbrush to brush underneath them to ensure thorough cleaning.
How important is flossing with braces, and how often should it be done?
Flossing is extremely important for maintaining happy and healthy gums during orthodontic treatment. Patients should floss at least X a day to prevent damage to their teeth and gums.
How do I perform a palatal expander turn for my child at home?
To perform an expander turn, first obtain the turning key. Have your child lay back with their head back, ensuring good lighting. Set the key at the proper angulation, noting the one or two black arrows pointing downwards that indicate the turn direction. Insert the key into the tiny hole between the arrows, keep it inserted, and turn it straight up. Push straight down to complete the turn, then carefully remove the key from the back. Verify completion by looking for a brand new hole on top. If you are still having trouble, please give the office a call for further assistance.
What is the 'Retainers for Life Program' and how does it work?
Dr. Velez's practice offers a 'Retainers for Life Program' which covers accidental breakage or loss of retainers after completing treatment. If you lose or break your retainers, call the office to schedule an appointment for a 3D scan of your teeth. New retainers are typically ready for pickup within 24 to 48 hours. Patients should never put their retainers in their pockets to avoid damage or loss.
Why does the practice take pictures of my face and teeth during orthodontic treatment, and who sees them?
The practice takes pictures of your face and teeth when you are ready to begin treatment. These photos serve two main purposes: they allow you to observe your treatment progress from start to finish, and they enable the doctors to perform necessary measurements for correcting the alignment of your bite and teeth. Only the practice staff will see your pictures, ensuring patient privacy.
How long do I need to wear my retainers?
You should wear your retainers for as long as you wish to maintain the optimal appearance of your smile.
