Questions, Answers, and Information Directly from Dr. Mark Ginsburg, DO

Sourced directly from Dr. Mark Ginsburg, DO's social posts and replies.

Does the nose continue to grow with age?
It's a common misconception that the nose continues to grow. In reality, the nose is fully grown by the late teenage years. Changes in shape, such as widening of the nasal tip or drooping, occur due to the loosening of ligaments that hold the cartilage and soft tissue together, a normal part of the aging process.
How should I tape my nose after rhinoplasty, and what are the benefits?
Nose taping after rhinoplasty helps to achieve better tip definition, encourages the skin to settle, and slims the super tip area. The process involves applying tape right above the tip in the super tip area to hold pressure down, and a second piece just above the incision, curved around the tip to slim it, ensuring nostrils are not blocked. This compresses the super tip and pinches the tip itself. Patients are recommended to apply the tape overnight and when relaxing at home.
What is saddle nose deformity and how is it treated?
Saddle nose deformity refers to a collapsed nasal bridge or a loss of nasal height, characterized by an indentation in the middle part of the nose, resembling a saddle. This cartilaginous defect can significantly affect both breathing and the cosmetic appearance of the nose. Dr. Ginsburg repairs saddle nose using cartilage and bone grafting, frequently utilizing rib cartilage to raise the nasal bridge, restore necessary support, and improve both nasal function and overall appearance. The graft is anchored to the tip cartilage for strength.
What is the typical recovery timeline and expectations after rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty recovery involves several stages. While initial results are visible early on, significant swelling can persist for weeks, and bruising may last longer depending on the extent of the surgery. For instance, patients at 3-4 weeks post-op are still typically swollen, with final results often becoming apparent over several months. Full healing can take up to a year or more, with some patients showing excellent outcomes at 9 months post-operation.

What areas of care does Dr. Mark Ginsburg, DO cater to?
Dr. Ginsburg specializes in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery, and head and neck surgery (otolaryngology). He addresses nasal deformities, aging faces, and offers procedures such as rhinoplasty, facelifts, blepharoplasty, and dermal fillers. He also performs subcision for acne scar treatment. Dr. Ginsburg's expertise extends to complex nasal surgeries, including septorhinoplasty for both functional breathing issues (like caudal deflection and deviated septum) and cosmetic concerns (such as nasal deviation, dorsal hump, tip ptosis, and overprojection), where he focuses on straightening the septum, refining tip definition, and correcting asymmetries. He also specializes in saddle nose repair, utilizing cartilage and bone grafting, often rib cartilage, to restore nasal height, support, and improve both breathing and appearance. For otoplasty, he meticulously recreates the antihelical fold with sutures and subtle skin removal to achieve a natural ear position and shape. His approach to complex rhinoplasty cases, such as those with tensioned nose, excess cartilage, under-projection, under-rotation, dorsal hump, and deviated septum, involves straightening the nose, making it smaller and more defined, and reducing nostrils.
