For in-office glandular excision, local anesthesia is provided using a mixture of Lidocaine and Marcaine. Lidocaine takes effect in 2-5 minutes and lasts 1-2 hours. Marcaine takes effect in 2-10 minutes and lasts up to 7 hours, providing postoperative pain control. After the medication takes effect, the chest is prepped and draped sterilely before the procedure.

During a preoperative visit, the practice covers instructions for the day before surgery, the day after surgery, and post-operative care. The day before surgery, patients should eat healthy and hydrate well, and have nothing to eat or drink after midnight. On the morning of surgery, patients should shower with antibacterial soap (e.g., Dial cleanser), wear loose clothing, and avoid applying body lotion, deodorant, or cologne. Patients should also not wear any jewelry and should wear glasses instead of contact lenses.

Patients are expected to arrive at 6:30 AM on the morning of their surgery. Upon arrival, they will be met, given a gown, and have an IV started. The doctor will be present at 7:00 AM to perform drawings and markings, and patients will be in the operating room by 7:30 AM.

Symptoms of gynecomastia include swollen tissue under the nipple, tenderness, or discomfort. While rare, pain or nipple discharge can also occur and should be checked immediately.
