What is the expected longevity and safety of breast implants?
Breast augmentation devices are not permanent. Historically, older implants had a leak rate of about 50% at 10 years, leading to the adage of replacing them every decade. Modern silicone implants, often called gummy bear or cohesive gel implants, have a significantly improved leak rate of usually 5-10% every 10 years. Their gel is designed not to leak out even if the shell is compromised, unlike older implants which had a maple syrup-like consistency. Patients with new silicone implants do not need to remove them on a strict schedule.
