What is the typical recovery process and expectations after tummy tuck surgery?
After tummy tuck surgery, all patients are required to wear a compression garment for a minimum of six weeks. Manual lymphatic drainage massages, in addition to the garment, help reduce swelling more quickly. Every patient receives a surgical drain, typically one per side, though very small or petite patients may receive a single drain. These drain tubes remain in place until they meet specific criteria, usually one to two weeks after surgery. Patients also need to massage their surgical scar, with the practice recommending silicone-based products or silicone sheets to help the scar settle and fade. The tummy tuck scar typically looks its best about six months after surgery, and patients should be patient for their final results.
