How are saline and silicone implant ruptures detected?
Saline implants are filled with water, so a rupture is very obvious as the breast will look flat and is easy to detect. Silicone, being a gel, makes ruptures much more difficult to detect. Our practice often uses an MRI, which can show a crack or fracture in the silicone gel. Silicone ruptures are commonly detected in older implants, where the body forms very hard scar tissue around the ruptured implant, signaling the need to see a plastic surgeon.
