Dr. Caster recommends removing contact lenses before sleeping and always using clean hands when handling them. Contact lenses are easily contaminated, and sleeping in them can deprive the eyes of oxygen.

What does 20/20 vision mean?
In the term 20/20 vision, the first 20 represents the testing distance, which is 20 feet. The second 20 refers to the size of the letter a person with normal vision can barely see. Therefore, 20/20 vision means that at 20 feet, you can see the size 20 letter. Someone with 20/40 vision can only see the size 40 letter at 20 feet, which is twice the size of the 20 letter. Someone who is legally blind may only be able to see the 20/200 letter, which is 10 times as big as the 20/20 letter. Some people, especially younger people, can see better than 20/20, such as 20/15.

What should I know about eye floaters?
Floaters are common and are shadows in your vision. They are generally annoying but not a problem in and of themselves. However, new floaters are associated with a retinal problem about 1% of the time. If you suddenly get hundreds of new floaters, if a dark curtain blocks your vision, or if you have flashing lights for several hours, call your doctor. It is important to never self-diagnose floaters, flashes of light, or shadows in your vision. If you experience many floaters, flashes of light, or shadows for several hours, seek medical advice from your doctor.

When is LASIK preferred over ICL?
If a patient is a candidate for both ICL and LASIK, Dr. Caster generally views LASIK as a better choice because LASIK avoids putting a foreign body inside the eye and is performed on the outside of the eye, which is easier and safer.

If you experience any vision symptoms coming out of nowhere, it’s time to pay your doctor a visit. You need medical attention as soon as possible as it could be a range of issues. Although these symptoms are serious, do NOT self-diagnose.
