How to spot counterfeit Botox

The FDA’s alert listed what the fake product looked like:

  • A 150-unit vial and carton. The maker does not make a 150-unit vial.
  • “Botulinum Toxin Type A” printed as the active ingredient, instead of onabotulinumtoxinA.
  • An outer carton with non-English language.
  • Lot number C3709C3.

If you have trouble seeing, swallowing or breathing, or muscle weakness, after a botulinum toxin injection, the FDA says to contact a health care professional or go to the emergency room.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do Botox at home?

No. Botox is a prescription drug that has to be injected into the muscle by a trained, licensed provider. In April 2024 the FDA warned that counterfeit Botox bought from unlicensed sources was found in multiple states and linked to hospitalizations.

What happened with fake Botox in 2024?

The CDC investigated harmful reactions to counterfeit or mishandled botulinum toxin injections given between November 2023 and March 2024. Its final update (June 2024) counted 17 people in 9 states. 13 were hospitalized and 6 were treated with botulism antitoxin.

How can you spot counterfeit Botox?

The FDA's 2024 alert listed these signs on the fake product: a 150-unit vial (the maker does not make one), "Botulinum Toxin Type A" instead of onabotulinumtoxinA on the carton, non-English packaging and lot number C3709C3. Ask your provider where the product came from.

Does "Botox in a bottle" work like Botox?

It is not the same thing. Botox works because it is injected into the muscle and interrupts the nerve signal. A topical serum is a cosmetic, not a prescription toxin injected into the muscle.

How long does Botox last?

About 3 to 4 months, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Results start in 3 to 5 days and reach full effect around 7 to 10 days.

How much does Botox cost?

On NavMDs the median patient-reported price for a cosmetic Botox treatment is $450, from 502 doctors, with the middle half of prices between $300 and $650. Your price depends on how many units and areas are treated.

Is cheap Botox at a party safe?

The CDC's investigation traced harm to counterfeit products, products from unverified sources and injectors not following state requirements. The CDC's advice: only get botulinum toxin injections if the product comes from an authorized supplier, and if in doubt, don't get the injection.
